I own a reactive and anxious dog. She was once afraid to go outside due to noise, bears, rain ect and we have successfully traveled cross country and camped in Yellowstone. She is a completely different dog compared to what she was feeling before. Recognizing body language, what the high values for that dog is, understanding space and when they are over stimulated and breaking it down to the very basic commands and reinforcing what they already know to build trust before doing something new. Understanding that they communicate via noise and body language and it’s up to us to read and respond appropriately and not with aggression or fear but with patience and space.

I accomodate by getting a full history of the dogs reactivity moments so I understand what might be triggers and what might be moments in time. What might be an owners anxiety or a dog anxiety. Then I focus on building trust. If it’s cookies or play or just being in the home while the dog gets to know me first and then we move onto more interaction but i also explain to the owner depending on how reactive the dog is how much i would like the owner there or if the owner should leave. Sometimes they warm up quicker when they are not guarding an owner and we can get some exercise in as my main focus is walking, playing, or overnight care. My main focus is being the fun interactive person the dog will grow to enjoy seeing and the owner will be able to take a break from the house and get back to taking vacations again.
